Terms of use
Last updated on 2 November 2026
These terms apply to the ça va? app and the service behind it. By using ça va?, you agree to them. We wrote them as simply as we could. Questions? Write to hallo@usecava.app.
1. Who provides ça va?
ça va? is provided by Jan-Peter Dhallé, in Flanders (Belgium), reachable at hallo@usecava.app. How we handle data is described in the privacy policy.
2. What ça va? does
ça va? notices whether the phone of someone who lives alone is used. If it stays quiet for a long time, that phone first gets a silent question, then the family with the app gets a message, and then those without the app as well. By default this happens after 12, 24 and 36 hours; those who manage the circle can change these durations. Messages made at night wait until 07:30.
3. What ça va? is not
ça va? is not an emergency service and not a medical service. It calls no one, sends no one round and does not know how someone is: it only sees whether the phone is used. If you are seriously worried, call yourself, or 112.
ça va? comes on top of the family's care and contact, not instead of it. Those who keep an eye out remain responsible for the care of the person who lives alone.
4. What can go wrong
We do our best, but we cannot promise that every silence is noticed or that every message arrives on time. Among other things, these can stop ça va?:
- the phone is off, broken or lost, or has no internet;
- Android or the maker's battery saver stops the app, or a permission is withdrawn;
- the phone of someone keeping an eye out does not receive or show the messages;
- an email ends up in spam;
- our server or a company that helps us (such as Cloudflare, Resend or Google) is briefly unreachable;
- someone else uses the phone, so it looks as if all is well.
When ça va? can no longer see something, it tells those who manage the circle as well as it can.
5. Your account
Those who keep an eye out sign in with a Google account. An account is personal and for people aged 16 or over. Secure your phone: anyone who can open it can use ça va? in your name.
Whoever adds a person manages that circle: they choose the durations and hear when ça va? cannot see something. Those who join with a code follow along. You can always erase your account in the app.
6. The person who lives alone knows and agrees
Only put ça va? on the phone of someone who knows what it does and agrees to it. Explain what it sees (only whether the phone is used) and who gets messages. If someone can no longer decide this themselves, only their legal representative decides, in their interest.
Anyone who no longer wants to take part can remove the app from the phone, or write to us at hallo@usecava.app: we then erase everything about them.
Also add someone without the app only if they agree.
7. What is not allowed
Use ça va? only for what it is meant for. So not:
- to follow someone who does not know or does not want it, including a partner, employee or housemate;
- with a false name or someone else's email address;
- to guess codes, overload the service, or get in where you do not belong;
- to harass or mislead anyone.
If someone does so anyway, we may refuse them access.
8. What it costs
The basics of ça va? are free for the whole family. If paid extras ever come, we will say what they cost in advance, and you only pay if you choose to.
9. If ça va? changes or stops
We keep improving ça va?, and sometimes that changes how it works. Should we ever stop it, we will announce this at least 30 days in advance so you can download your data, unless something beyond our control makes that impossible.
10. Liability
ça va? is provided as it is. We are liable for damage we cause intentionally or through gross negligence. For other damage, such as damage because a silence was not noticed or noticed late, or a message did not arrive, we are not liable, as far as the law allows.
Nothing in these terms limits your rights as a consumer, or our liability where the law does not allow it, such as for death or bodily injury caused by our own act or omission.
11. Changes
If we change these terms, the new date appears at the top. We announce important changes in advance. If you do not agree, you can erase your account.
12. Law and courts
Belgian law applies to these terms. If we cannot work it out together, the Belgian courts have jurisdiction. As a consumer you may also go to the court where you live, and the protective rules of the country where you live continue to apply.
